This Saturday we were lucky enough to have a behind the scenes tour of Dover’s Maison Dieu building with the amazing Martin Crowther!
On Valentine’s Day this year a group of hardy families and volunteers braved the cold to go and explore Wildwood’s medieval animals!
We went on our first training workshop for the Medieval Animals Heritage Project and it was great, we learnt so much and we had fun too. It was a lovely way to spend a very wet Saturday afternoon, you may recall that Friday had seen Storm Eunice cause a great deal of damage across the country.
It is through the work by J. K. Rowling that most people now have an idea about the basilisk today. She is famously quoted describing the beast, ‘…Its methods of killing are more wonderous, for aside from its deadly and venomous fangs, the Basilisk has a murderous stare and all who are fixed with the beam of its eye shall suffer instant death…’ (Rowling, 1998).
Dr Sheila Sweetinburgh has kindly allowed me to take over her blog this week for some very exciting news! I am delighted to announce my project on Medieval Animals Heritage in East Kent has been awarded a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £99,800, so first things first: Thank you Lottery Heritage Fund and thanks National Lottery players too.
Thank you very much for signing up to our new and (we very much hope) fun project to translate and then update the earliest medieval Latin prose bestiary. Your help will be invaluable in allowing us to spread these wonderful (and occasionally bizarre) stories about Medieval Animals and the task is a core part of the Medieval Animals Heritage in East Kent project. Thank you for joining us.
Friends may have seen the Centre for Kent History and Heritage blog in September where we gave details of a new Lottery Heritage Fund grant that we have received for a project on Medieval Animals Heritage in our local area.
