It is a pleasure to show you the terrific photographs by Mike Vaile of a medieval font in Staple’s parish church, St James the Great. The font (believed to be fifteenth century) is decorated with the symbols of the Apostles – the Lion of St Mark, the Eagle of St John, the Ox of St Luke , and the Angel of St Matthew. There are Lions and a Woodwose or Wildman carved on the base.
The Church was substantially renovated in the nineteenth century by George Street and the plans are held by Lambeth Palace Library and digitized here Signed George Edmund Street – Incorporated Church Building Society (ICBS) (lambethpalacelibrary.org.uk). Mike has kindly included a photograph of the church exterior.
